St. Mary's Hospital for Children is currently seeking a Respiratory Therapist who will deliver quality respiratory care to pediatric residents ranging in age from newborn to young adult. The qualified candidate will plan, implement and evaluate a respiratory plan of care to meet the individual requirements of each resident in collaboration with the interdisciplinary care plan team. He/She will also serve as a liaison with family members and outside agencies to provide comprehensive care and discharge planning, for respiratory requirements and support the Hospital's mission to provide the highest quality care by complying with regulatory guidelines, meeting facility standards, and maintaining appropriate certification.

1. This position is comprised of thirteen 12-hour shifts within a four-week period, with alternating weekends. Some holidays will be worked. Hours for this position are 7pm - 7:30am.

2. BCLS, PALS and ACLS are required for this position; you will have six months from the time of hire to complete them. They are to be current for the entirety of your employment.


  • Plan, implement and evaluate a respiratory plan of care to meet the individual requirements of each resident in collaboration with the interdisciplinary care team.

  • Complete resident assessments for breath sounds, peak flow, blood pressure, SAO2 according to facility policy and physician orders.

  • Provide treatment, evaluation, monitoring and management of breathing disorders and cardiovascular problems; administer oxygen, pulmonary toileting, administer medications, monitor pulmonary systems and measure lung function.

  • Determine requirements for treatment, such as type, method and duration of therapy, precautions, medication and dosages, compatible with physician's orders.

  • Monitor resident's physiological responses to therapy, such as vital signs, pulmonary function, and consult with physician when indicated.

  • Provide critical airway management during a Code Blue or Medical Assist including positive pressure ventilation via bag and mask as required. Perform CPR according to PALS/ACLS standards.

  • Provide ventilator management and assist with bedside weaning assessment and trials.

  • Inspect, clean, test and maintain respiratory therapy equipment to ensure equipment is functioning safely and efficiently, ordering repairs when necessary, according to facility policy.

  • Provide tracheotomy care and decannulation of trached residents according to facility policy

  • Participate in therapist driven protocols for weaning of residents from ventilators.

  • Collaborate with the interdisciplinary team to manage resident care.

  • Communicate with staff regarding changes in patient condition.

  • Monitor and record patient responses to treatment in the medical record.

  • Serve as a clinical resource for nursing staff, residents, and families.

  • Facilitate coordination of care between St. Mary's Hospital for Children and outside agencies. Document all such communication in the medical record.

  • Participate in Comprehensive Care Plan Meetings.

  • Educate residents and their families about their conditions and teach appropriate disease management techniques, such as breathing exercises and the use of medications and respiratory equipment.

  • Create, update, and maintain policies and procedures for the Respiratory Department, in collaboration with the Policy and Procedure Committee

  • Participate actively in department's quality improvement activities.

Formal education required:

  1. Graduation from high school, or the equivalent; and

  2. Completion of an associate or higher degree program in respiratory therapy or an acceptable accrediting agency.

  3. Must be registered or registry eligible by the National Board of Respiratory Therapists by the NYS Department of Education and hold a current license in New York State.

Previous experience required:

  1. Three years experience in an acute or long term care setting preferred.

  2. Experience working with the neonatal and pediatric population desirable.
